Aave Guardians

Overview

Aave Guardians are community-elected groups with emergency protection permissions on Aave smart contracts. The guardian system is split into two distinct roles with different responsibilities and members, ensuring separation of concerns for protocol safety.

Protocol Emergency Guardian

Configuration: 5-of-9 multisig Role: Holder of EMERGENCY_ADMIN role in Aave v2, v3, and surrounding systems Purpose: Rapid response to protocol emergencies

Governance Emergency Guardian

Key Characteristics

Protocol Emergency Guardian

  • Requires rapid response capability
  • Composed primarily of active service providers and delegates
  • Can pause protocol functions in emergencies
  • Focus on immediate protocol security

Governance Emergency Guardian

  • Longer response window (proposals run 5 days)
  • Different membership from Protocol Guardian for separation of powers
  • Works with Certora on proposal verification
  • Focus on governance security

Operational Framework

  1. Guardian actions are purely protective
  2. No management powers in the Aave ecosystem
  3. Members elected through standard governance procedures
